Most people who write cyber blogs write sexy cool blogs about cool and sexy l33t h@x. All that cool and sexy red team stuff. Did I mention that offensive cyber is cool and sexy?

Well not this guy!

My blog is about uncool, nerdy, and unattractive defensive cyber operations. ‘Boooo’ I hear you shout, ‘we want the other stuff!’. Well you’ve come to the wrong place. This impending blog will use Sun Tzu’s classic text as a primer for DEFENSIVE cyber operations, and if that’s not what you want then what are you doing reading this far down?

So.. what the hell is this?

The Art of Cyber is a project by me, cyber security expert Remy Coll.

It is a ‘translation’ (for want of a better word) of Sun Tzu’s military theory book The Art of War. The aim is to use the ancient words of Sun Tzu as a primer to talk about cyberspace. Using The Art of War allows me to contextualise cyber operations into defensive and offensive kinetic actions and considerations. After all, everyone loves a metaphor.

So you’re stealing a dead Chinese general’s words to make your opinions seem reasonable?

Yes

Though it’s not considered stealing because Sun Tzu died a really really really long time ago.

But it wasn’t written in english

You are correct, it was not. The sayings are from an english translation by Lionel Giles first published in 1910. This same translation is used by suntzusaid.com and is a matter of public record held by Project Gutenberg. The suntzusaid site is much more easily searchable if you are looking for ease of reference.

Okay sounds good, there’s hundreds of passages though. Will this blog use all of them?

No, this project will contain the most pithy and relevant to cyber operations. I will eventually use the entire Art of War text in a book, entitled “The Art of Cyber”. If you like my work then please buy my book… when it is written and published.

If you’re a publisher then please publish my book.
